INTRODUCTION:
ACHI unit of NYSC-CDS group is composed of
corps members that were posted to Achi Community, Oji-River Local Government Area

The unit, since April 2013, operates NYSC/Road Safety Club, under the Federal
Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Enugu Sector Command. However, in response to the
role of corps members to help sensitize and educate the people in the community
on vital issues of life and environmental maintenance, Mass Literacy and

at our CDS spot. (2)In-house Lectures done by the P.P.A. Heads (corpers) of
various schools based on lecture roster.

|
Project Benefits: Participating
schools and winning students will be awarded Certificate of Participation,
Award plague, Material gift, Monetary rewards.
OUR CHALLENGES:
It is expedient to reveal some challenges
facing corps members and the CDS group in the unit which include:
Ø
Corpers’
Welfare: More attention should be given to improve the
general welfare of corps members. Some employers are doing very little to cater
for the needs of corpers serving in their schools/establishments, propelled
with lack of care and motivation.
Ø
Accomodation: Some employers still fail to provide
accommodation for corpers in their schools/ establishments. This makes some
corpers to spend huge money to secure accommodation for
themselves and in most cases the rented apartments are usually far away from
the places of primary assignment.
Ø
Thursdays
CDS Observance: Many of the employers give no regard to Thursdays CDS. In many schools, the
management do assign compelling duties to serving corps members, while claiming
that the CDS is not that necessary.
Ø
Fund
and Sponsorship: Lack of
necessary sponsorship and funding from the community to help in financing and
executing benefiting CDS projects. For instance, we would not have been able to
actualize most of our CDS projects if not for the voluntary donation from corps
members.
RECOMMENDATION
It can be observed that the suggested solutions
below if put into due consideration, in essence will fortify the activities of
corpers in Achi unit and help bring more positive changes in the community and
NYSC scheme.
o
The NYSC
authorities should send a circular to all schools or establishments or re-visit
all employers in the unit, letting them know the importance of corpers’ welfare
and that accommodation is a necessity.
o
Circular
should be sent to all employers in the unit to alert them that Thursdays has
been officially set aside for corpers’ Community Development Service programme.
o
The NYSC
officials should help sensitize the community through the community leaders to
provide necessary assistance and support to corps members whenever the need
arises.
CONCLUSION
In view of the above, the entire
corps members in Achi community are doing well to contribute immensely towards
the development of people of Achi and Achi community as a whole. This is in the
fulfilment of the clarion call and in observance of the NYSC scheme and Motto;
“Service and Humility” and towards
the development of our beloved nation Nigeria.
Long live Achi
Corpers - Long live Achi Community!
Long live NYSC!!
Long live Enugu State
- Long live Nigeria!!!
